Margaret (“Maggie”) Power began working at Ellenhorn in October 2019 as a milieu counselor. After excelling in this position, she was subsequently awarded the role of human right’s officer and then promoted to overnight milieu counselor lead. She has been a licensed CNA for 30 years, and has worked with elderly and disabled adults in nursing homes, hospitals and in-home settings, as well as a mental-health counselor in a psychiatric unit. Maggie earned an associate degree in communication and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Mass.
Maggie’s passion for the field of psychology was ignited by the tragic loss of her daughter, Megan, to a drunk driver in 2007. Since then, Maggie has used her time to volunteer for Mothers Against Drunk Driving with a mission to change the laws for drunk-driving offenders. She has spoken at schools in memory of Megan in order to educate youth and young adults about the dangers of drunk driving, has held benefits called “Megan’s Dream” in her daughter’s name, and raised money for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to honor her daughter’s dreams and goals. Her dedication to mental health and society has helped her heal, give back and find her own passion for helping others.
Maggie has a positive attitude, warm smile and a big, welcoming personality that helps her build trust with her clients. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, she shares her talents by teaching dance and frequently organizing dance nights for the clients. She helps others heal and promotes independence by sharing her love for dance. Maggie is personally familiar with loss, struggle and pain, which, she believes, allows her to understand the hardships the clients experience and respond with kindness and empathy.
