A history of marginalization, high-risk addictive behavior and trauma undeniably impact a person’s social cognitions. This talk focuses specifically on the LGBTQ+ population, explores the importance of IDDT and other contextual models when working with highly marginalized clients who engage in risky behaviors. Adaptive environmental responses and their influence on social cognitions and behaviors are also be explored with the aim of increasing our ability to mentalize and empathize with marginalized populations.
